Project Launched: Second-hand Clothing (Mtumba) Resale with Kay Households
Project Overview
In Kajiado, Kenya, a powerful new initiative is underway: the Second-Hand (Mtumba) Business Project through Kay Households (HAKAY). With the support of a TGE, this project is enhancing opportunities for women and youth to build sustainable livelihoods through the second-hand clothing market.
Mission
The mission of Kay Households (HAKAY) is simple yet powerful:
"To empower women and youth through sustainable income opportunities and entrepreneurship."
The project focuses on eliminating costly intermediaries by establishing a direct supply chain, making second-hand clothing (known locally as Mtumba) more affordable for local resellers. Through pooled purchasing, skill-building workshops, and business mentorship, the program will empower 20 women and young people to launch and grow their own businesses.
This initiative is about building economic independence, strengthening families, and creating stronger, healthier communities.
Project Measurements
Success will be evaluated through:
● Employment Creation: Number of beneficiaries who launch and maintain businesses.
● Income Growth: Total monthly income earned by participants and profit margins achieved.
● Market Expansion: Volume of Mtumba bales sold collectively across Kajiado and neighboring areas.
● Financial Transformation: Improvements in participants’ financial stability and independence.
● Scalability: Ability to replicate the project in new communities over time, maintaining profitability.
We look forward to monitoring the success of this project and collaborating with Kay Households to create lasting change.
